Middletown Friends Meeting Burial Ground
The Middletown Friends Graveyard is located between the Friends Meeting House and the old Friends School House located along West Maple Avenue in Langhorne, PA.. The graveyard straddles the border between Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough and is situated behind a 1737 stone wall.
The graveyard is intended for the use by members of the meeting and their families and has been used by members since the early 18th century. Directly behind the stone wall is the area where early Quakers were buried without monuments as was the tradition leading up to about the 1850s. Quakers believed in equality in life and equality in death. Friends finally decided that under certain circumstances, marking graves could be appropriate, and so Friends moved towards a new testimony of simplistic headstones. Since that time there have been about 1400 burials in the graveyard, mostly all including a headstone.
Burial lots are available for purchase by members and for those non-members who demonstrate a family or meaningful connection to the meeting. Lots are available for casket, cremation and naturalistic burials.
Visitors to the graveyard are welcome to conduct quiet reflection. The placement of artificial flowers or other non-biodegradable items is discouraged. Game playing, pet recreation and loud activities are prohibited.
Historical information regarding names and burial dates is available for the period after 1850. Prior to that date inquiries and historical information may be found at the Friends Historical Library in Swarthmore, PA, historical societies or other grave finding services.
